Richard G. Stephenson

Executive Vice President, Chief Legal and Risk Officer

Richard Stephenson has been General Counsel at Mechanics Bank since 2009 and became its Chief Legal and Risk Officer in July, 2012. Mr. Stephenson oversees all of the Bank’s legal affairs and risk management strategies. He is a member of the Bank’s Executive Committee, as well as a number of other Bank committees, and he chairs the Enterprise Risk Management Committee and the Retirement Plans Committee. He serves as Secretary of the Corporation/Board of Directors, and of the Macdonald Auxiliary Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary that acts as the trustee for all Mechanics Bank-originated real estate loans.

Mr. Stephenson also represents the Bank as a member of the California Bankers Association’s State Government Relations Committee and its Legal Affairs Committee.

Mr. Stephenson joined Mechanics Bank after serving in a number of legal and executive positions at various law firms and financial institutions, including Morrison & Foerster LLP, Bank of America and Washington Mutual Bank. He is a graduate of Claremont McKenna College (cum laude) and the School of Law at the University of San Diego.

Mr. Stephenson is a board member and member of the strategic planning committee of K to College, a not-for-profit organization that promotes equal access to education by ensuring that every student has the resources to learn from kindergarten to college.
