Target Stores Data Breach

On December 19, 2013, Target Corporation issued a Press Release that included the following information:

“We (Target) wanted to make you aware of unauthorized access to Target payment card data. The unauthorized access may impact guests who made credit or debit card purchases in our U.S. stores from Nov. 27 to Dec. 15, 2013. Your trust is a top priority for Target, and we deeply regret the inconvenience this may cause. The privacy and protection of our guests’ information is a matter we take very seriously and we have worked swiftly to resolve the incident.”

At Mechanics Bank, we view the security of your personal and financial information as a top priority. And, you can rest assured, that we are taking appropriate steps to properly protect the privacy of your account(s).

In response to this week’s breach, the Bank will be receiving a list, of those cards believed to have been compromised and we are taking immediate action to reissue new cards to replace those compromised.

If your card has been compromised, you can expect to receive a new Mechanics Bank debit card within the next 7 – 10 business days. The new card will have the same card number but will contain a new Expiration Date and a new CVC number. As such, if you have any automatic payments linked to your existing debit card, you will need to notify the biller immediately upon the receipt of your new debit card and provide them with your updated card information to avoid disruption of your payment(s).

At this time, it is our understanding that the PIN number associated with each debit card was not compromised. What this means is that your debit card still has this additional layer of protection. It also means that someone cannot visit an ATM with a fraudulent card and withdraw cash. However, as we always do, we strongly recommend that you continue to closely monitor all account activity regularly.
