What is a Authentication Image and Pass Phrase?

Every time you log in to Online Banking, we will identify you by displaying a Authentication Image and Pass Prase that you have already chosing when you enrolled for Online Banking.


What keeps someone from stealing my Authentication Image and Pass Phrase?

If an unauthorized person tries to log in to your account from another computer, they will be asked one of your challenge questions. Without the correct challenge question, this additonal security level will not appear and they will not be able to log in to your account.


When will I see my Authentication Image and Pass Phrase?

Your secret authentication image and pass phrase automatically appear only if you log in from a computer we already recognize as yours. If you log in from a different computer, we will ask one of your challenge questions before showing your authentication image and pass phrase that you have chosen.


What are Challenge Questions and why do I need to set them?

Challenge questions help prevent unauthorized access to your Online Banking information. If we don't recognize your computer, we will ask you a Challenge Question to verify your identity.


How do I change my Authentication Image, Pass Phrase and Challenge Questions?

After you log in to Online Banking, you can change any of these enhanced online security settings at anytime by editing your User Options.

Security Tip: We will never ask you to change your private information, and we will never change it for you.

  • To change your Authentication Image:
    • Click the User Options from the navigation menu.
    • Click the Edit button under Security Data.
    • Click the "Change Image" link under your Authentication Image, and begin browsing the image library. To hold an image while you browse the image library, check the "Remember Image" box below any image.
    • Click directly on the image to select it once you have selected an image you would like to use.
    • Click the Submit button to confirm your changes.

  • To change your Pass Phrase:
    • Click the User Options from the navigation menu.
    • Click the Edit button under Security Data.
    • Type a new Pass Phrase under your Authentication Image.
    • Click the Submit button to confirm your changes.

  • To change your Challenge Questions:
    • Click the User Options from the navigation menu.
    • Click the Edit button under Security Data.
    • Select a Challenge Question from a drop down menu and provide an answer that is unique to you.
    • Click the Submit button to confirm your changes.


How do you know that I'm logging in from my own computer?

When you register your computer your Web browser sends us a cookie, which lets us know that you're using your own computer. Your Authentication Image and Pass Phrase automatically appear only if you log in from a computer we already recognize as yours or we will ask you a Challenge Question to verify your identity.

Security Tip: If you are on a public computer, for your own protection, we recommend that you do not register it.


How do I know that I'm at the valid Online Banking site?

Your Authentication Image and Pass Phrase will appear confirming that you're at the Mechanics Bank legitimate Web site.
