WALNUT CREEK, CA, February 27, 2014 — Raulin (“Rauly”) J. Butler has been promoted to Executive Vice President at Mechanics Bank, where he continues to lead the Retail Banking Group.
Mr. Butler joined Mechanics Bank in 1996 after heading the Berkeley Main office of Wells Fargo and opened a highly successful de novo office in Berkeley for Mechanics Bank in early 1997. “After 15 years at Wells Fargo, I thought my style of banking was better suited to a community bank” he says. “Banks should be driven by customer service and bankers should be community leaders.”
That philosophy helped Mr. Butler establish a strong reputation for community involvement and extraordinary customer service. He was promoted to Senior Vice President and Manager of the Retail Banking Group in 2000.
At Mechanics Bank, Mr. Butler became known as “Mr. Berkeley.” He has been a fixture on Berkeley and Richmond nonprofit boards and committees for decades. He currently serves on boards and committees of Satellite Affordable Housing Associates, A Better way Inc., the Richmond Public Library Foundation, the Richmond Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Richmond Community Foundation.
“Rauly puts the ‘community’ in community banking,” says Christa Steele, CEO of Mechanics Bank. “He helped create a retail banking group that is the envy of the industry, and which maintains Mechanics Bank’s century-long reputation as the leader in customer service. His promotion recognizes not only his contributions, but those of his exceptional retail team.”
“Today, there is so much speculation about whether retail banking will survive in the future,” Mr. Butler says. “While there’s no doubt that retail banking will face more change in the next ten years than it has in the last 30, it will continue to play a critical role in building relationships with clients.”
Mr. Butler’s wife Sarah is also committed to community service and is well known in Berkeley and Orinda, where they raised their two children. She is an elected member the Orinda Union School District School Board, and a member of the Contra Costa Democratic Central Committee.
A 1982 San Francisco State University graduate with a BS in Business Administration, Mr. Butler also graduated from the ABA-Stonier Graduate School of Banking in Philadelphia, PA and the BAI Graduate School of Retail Banking in Madison, WI, and holds a Wharton Leadership certificate.
