Grant Hellar Joins Mechanics Bank in Marin

Grant Hellar has been appointed Vice President, Business Development Officer of Mechanics Bank, assigned to Marin County.

Hellar, whose banking career spans four decades in international and private banking in Australia, Japan, Santa Barbara and San Francisco, most recently served as a financial consultant to First Republic Bank. He began his career at Bank of America and also worked for Redwood Bank and Montecito Bank & Trust. He is exceptionally well-known in Marin where he has volunteered with numerous nonprofit organizations. That includes a decade on the Marin Food Bank Board of Directors (2000-2010), serving on the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center, on the Board of Directors and as a recruiter for the Semester at Sea Alumni Association, as Board Treasurer for the Aldersly Garden Retirement Community and as an interviewer for Yale Alumni Schools Committee. He is a past President of the President’s Council of Dominican University of California, and a former Trustee of Lawrenceville School in New Jersey where he attended high school.

“There probably is no one more knowledgeable about and connected to the Marin community than Grant,” said Rauly Butler, Senior Vice President of Retail Banking at Mechanics Bank. “Given our mission to help build prosperous communities as a trusted financial partner, we’re delighted to have someone of his stature on the team.”

A lifelong student, Hellar received a BA from Yale University and then served in the Navy. After the Navy, he attended the Scandinavian Seminar in Copenhagen. In 1973, he completed the Harvard/Hawaii Advanced Management Program and in 1996, the University of Pittsburgh/Virginia Semester at Sea program.

Hellar will be based in Mechanics Bank’s San Rafael Office. He and his wife Eva live in San Rafael.
